Built by a British sympathizer in the 1760s, Cliveden was famously used as a stronghold for British troops in 1777 as General George Washington's troops attacked. Now preserved as a historical home and museum, the structure has visible damage from the Battle of Germantown, as the short-lived siege came to be known. Inside, the home is used to display antique furnishings and decorative objects from the 1700s and 1800s, and guided tours offer a history of the home and many of its most prized objects. It is located in what is still known as the Germantown area of Philadelphia, just blocks from the Johnson House Historic Site and the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion.
Open Apr - Dec: Thurs - Sun noon - 4:00 p.m.
