Built to embody the architectural and horticultural styles that were favored among the upper classes in 17th century Japan. The main house was designed in the shoin-zukuri style, known for containing many distinctly modern elements despite its antique nature, and is the only known example of this architectural form in the nation. A guided tour of the home provides a wealth of information about the interesting details of the home and the culture from which it came. Surrounding the building, the beautifully maintained Japanese gardens are a pleasure to walk through, displaying many non-native species of plants and interesting landscapes of rock, water and earth. Located inside Fairmount Park, the serenity of the gardens are amplified by the quiet surroundings of this favorite city park.
